“A Healthy Outside Starts with a Healthy Inside!”
In my opinion, one of my most important fitness regimes of the day is my morning workout followed by my protein shake. But it’s not just the protein that makes this shake special. I’ve discovered this wonderful food source called “NutraCleanse” that I have been adding to my daily shakes. Now before you start thinking about the harsh colon cleanses that make you run back and forth to the bathroom for an hour, let me explain to you what this is.
NutraCleanse is an all-natural, gluten free, nutritious high fiber food source that consists of ground flax seeds, dandelion root powder, ground psyllium husks, burdock root powder and fenugreek seed powder.
I first discovered this product about a year and a half ago by accident when a supplement store messed up my order. To compensate they shipped me a bunch of samples of NutraCleanse. It was instant love, and as soon as I finished my samples I placed an order for 3 months worth because it was coming all the way from BC.
Why do I love it? It tastes great, it was easy to incorporate into my diet and it really helped with my digestion issues and helped me lose weight. Plus with all the healthy benefits, what’s not to love? Even if some of the benefits are not physically evident (like the extra minerals, liver cleanse and lowering your cholesterol). I’ve been using this product daily since I first discovered it. For the most part I use it every morning (breakfast) and I even travel with it! On the days that I don’t take it, know my body misses it. And I know I’m not alone, there are so many others who feel the same way about this product that I do! Click here to read other testimonials.
Around the time when I started using NutraCleanse regularly I had just decided to finally dedicate myself to losing the weight (about 15lbs) that I had gained over the last few years FOR GOOD. In 2009 and 2010 I had tried to lose my extra weight and though I did lose weight each time (quickly), I only managed to maintain the weight loss for a month or two and it came back quickly. This time around I’ve had a much easier time with maintaining my weight loss because my approach is different. Instead of trying to lose weight quickly and “dieting” I decided to try and concentrate on eating the right balance of all the important nutrients – Protein, Good Fats, Carbohydrates and FIBER. NutraCleanse contains ALL of these nutrients and my morning protein shake which consists of 1 scoop of whey protein and 1/3 cup of NutraCleanse is the perfect 40% Protein, 30% Fat, 30% Carb balance for my post workout meal. With 14g of fiber, it makes up 50% of my recommended daily fiber intake.
Since July 2011, with the help of NutraCleanse I’ve managed to lose about 15lbs. It might not sound like a lot, and it may seem like a long time but I did it in a heathy way without driving myself insane. I did NOT deprive myself. AND, not only did I lose the weight, I’ve also gained muscle mass at the same time. I’m not saying that I owe my weight loss 100% to NutraCleanse, but it really helped by optimizing my digestive system, by maximizing by bodies ability to absorb the nutrients I was ingesting and ensuring that I got lots of good Omega 3’s and Fiber every day. One of the most commonly overlooked aspects of most fat loss programs is colon health, most diets don’t even contain 14g of fiber over a whole DAY of food!
Here is a brief description of the benefits of each of these ingredients:
Ground flax seeds are very low in carbohydrates, making it ideal for people who limit their intake of starches and sugars. And its combination of healthy fat and high fiber content make it a great food for weight loss and maintenance — many dieters have found that flax seed has been a key to keeping them feeling satisfied. Flax seed is also high in most of the B vitamins, magnesium, and manganese
Dandelion root provides vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin D and vitamin B complex, as well as zinc, iron and potassium. Because of its iron content, it is widely used as a remedy for liver ailments, and has a diuretic effect that can help rid the liver of toxins. Potassium is also necessary for proper kidney function, and can help lower blood pressure. Vitamins A, C and B complex are all important for heart health, and there is some suggestion that dandelion root may help lower cholesterol. It is also believed that dandelion root helps regulate blood sugar levels.
Psylium husks are indigestible in human beings and are often used as a source of dietary fiber. They are used to relieve constipation, irritable bowel syndrome, diverticular disease, and diarrhea. They are also used as a regular dietary supplement to improve and maintain regular GI transit. The inert bulk of the husks helps provide a constant volume of solid material irrespective of other aspects of the diet or any disease condition of the gut. Some recent research is also showing them to be promising in lowering cholesterol and controlling diabetes.
The benefits of burdock root extend to many different body systems including digestive, circulatory, respiratory, reproductive, glandular and immune systems. It is rich in natural vitamins, minerals, trace minerals, amino acids, sugars and starches. This list of its minerals is quite extensive including chromium, iron, magnesium, silicon, cobalt, phosphorous, potassium, aluminum, calcium, manganese, selenium and zinc. Burdock also contains thiamine, vitamin C, vitamin A, protein, inulin, phenolic acids, mucilage, pectin and fiber.
Fenugreek seed powder is known to have many benefits. It has anti-inflammatory properties, as well as being a diuretic and antiseptic. It also suppresses the appetite and increases lactation in breastfeeding women. It aids the digestive system and is beneficial to female health, having often been used in the past to help women recover from childbirth. Fenugreek seed powder, when ingested, serves as a coating for the stomach. It is also rich in iron, which can be beneficial to those with anemia. Fenugreek seeds contain polysaccharide galactomannan, saponins, mucilage, volatile oils and alkloids, which are all beneficial to the body and help to aid in proper bodily functions. It also includes a large amount of fiber, which contributes to its gastrointestinal properties. In fact, many of the health uses for fenugreek seed powder are related to its high fiber content.
As you can see, all of the ingredients in NutraCleanse are all natural and beneficial to our health. Here are a list of benefits of taking NutraCleanse:
• Optimum regularity
• Cleansing and detoxification of colon
• Improved digestion and absorption of nutrients by the body
• Prevention of hemorrhoids
• Lower cholesterol
• Lower blood pressure
• Assists in rebuilding of skin cells and cartilage
• Increased energy and vitality
• Maintenance of healthy body weight
How do you use NutraCleanse? Personally, I put 1/3 cup in with my protein powder and mix it together with water or almond milk. My friends have told me that they mix it with their oatmeal, cereal, milk, or juice. One friend just downs it with a glass of water. Recently somebody told me that they try to incorporate it into their meals, like adding some to a homemade meatball recipe. NutraCleanse has a nutty flavour (like flaxseeds) so it tastes good and there is a variety of ways you can use it.
One things I MUST emphasize is that you MUST drink enough water every day (8 glasses, ideally) for this to help you with digestion. If you don’t, it may have the opposite effect (ie. constipation). But really, even without taking NutraCleanse, you should be downing your H2O regularly anyways!
